Project Work in the Time of COVID-19
The COVID 19 pandemic severely limits the mobility of all people in the face of the necessary quarantines, travel restrictions and closures – including, of course, those of our experts and sales staff. However, we would like our clients to know that despite these restrictions, we continue to work hard on your projects.
Our consultants are used to intensive travel and working at several locations. They often do their work during airport stops and long flights. For this reason, it was easy for our experts to move their office workstation to the home office in order to reduce the risk of infection.
Wherever our employees work, even at our clients' premises, today's technology enables them to stay in touch with each other and with our clients – including via video conferencing. Our own international presence has been and continues to be supplemented by a worldwide and extensive network of partner companies and freelancers.
Although our mobility is limited, we continue to be active and committed to our clients. Even though there will be setbacks, we remain confident that we can make a positive contribution to our clients' projects.

Fichtner at the EU Hydrogen Online Forum
The EU Hydrogen Online Forum in the UAE: Hydrogen, the Energy Carrier of the Future was presented by the Delegation of the European Union to the United Arab Emirates and the EU-GCC Clean Energy Technology Network. At the forum that took place on 25 November 2020 our expert of Hydrogen, Dr. Florian Klumpp, spoke about “Green Hydrogen – Transport as enabler for viable value chains and an energy partnership between GCC and EU”.

Two years in a row: PFI Award “Deal of the Year”
After Saudi-Arabia’s first large-scale photovoltaic project won the “PFI Power Deal of the Year − Middle East and Africa” award for 2018, its first large-scale wind power project, Dumat Al Jandal (DAJ), is set to follow by receiving the 2019 “PFI Renewable Deal of the Year − Middle East and Africa” award on 5 February 2020 (Go to PFI Awards, under “View the Roll of Honour”). Fichtner acted as technical advisor for the tendering and contract award phase of the project. We join our client in celebrating this prestigious award.
China’s fifth large-scale CSP project now on stream
On 19 September 2019, the Luneng Haixi 50 MW CSP Project was successfully connected to the grid. It is part of the Luneng Haixi Complementary Multi-energy Demonstration Project located in Golmud, China. The Project also includes 400 MW of wind power, 200 MW of photovoltaic and 50 MW of energy storage. The plant is composed of a solar tower with a height of 188 m, 4,400 heliostats and 12 hours of molten salt storage. Fichtner was involved as owner’s engineer. Congratulations to our client, Luneng, on this great achievement!
Tunisia first solar park
Tunisia announces the grid-connection of the 10 MW facility in the south of the country. Fichtner is proud of having supported the state-owned utility Société Tunisienne de l'Electricité et du Gaz (STEG). The project was financed by the German development bank KFW. On another project, record low-priced proposals have been obtained in Tunisia’s IPP tender process. Here, Fichtner supported the German development agency GIZ as Technical Advisor.
BIM – 3D planning in all project phases
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is used to create a digital model containing all the relevant planning data. It allows for an interconnected way of working that makes the planning and construction process efficient and transparent using three-dimensional data models. We apply this method in numerous projects, e.g. for planning substations.
Photovoltaic park for Saudi Arabian agricultural and food-processing company
The first corporate photovoltaic PPA in KSA has been signed between the dairy company NADEC and French energy group Engie. The project will help to reduce HFO consumption and the carbon footprint. Fichtner supported NADEC with the feasibility study and the BOO implementation.
Record-breaking wind power tariff in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia’s first and the Middle East’s largest wind power project has reached financial close. The Dumat Al Jandal project was awarded in January 2019 for the record-tariff of 2.13 US cents/kWh to a consortium comprising EDF and Masdar. Fichtner acted as technical consultant for the tender and award phase of the project. We are delighted that financial close of the project was reached.
Visit to landfill construction site
Dr. Peter Schoof, the new German ambassador to Indonesia, visited the construction site of the landfill in Sidoarjo, Java, at the end of April and was accompanied by the head of the Indonesian KfW office, Angela Tormin. The ‘Emission Reduction In Cities’ project is financed by KfW and currently comprises three different construction sites, two of which are in East Java and one in Sumatra.
Guide to Renewable Energy
With the assistance of engineers from Fichtner, the German Association of Consulting Engineers (VBI) has published an international guide on the possibilities and potential of various kinds of renewable energies. It explains the state of the art in generating and using renewable energies and presents detailed project planning processes. The guide has been released in German and English and is intended to facilitate the planning and implementation of renewable energy projects both inside and outside of Germany.
Jordan’s biggest solar PV power plant comes on stream
With the start-up of Quweira 103 MW Photovoltaic Power Plant in the south of the country, the Jordanian government took a further step in implementing its ambitious renewable energies development plan. Acting as Owner’s Engineer, Fichtner provided assistance to the project.
World’s Cheapest Solar Power Tariff in Saudi Arabia
ACWA Power has won a 300 MW photovoltaics tender with a record tariff of the equivalent of 2.34 US cents/kWh. Fichtner is assisting the ministry responsible in implementing the country’s first PV and wind IPP projects.
C/sells − Showcase for smart grids of the future
Energy transition: Together with more than 60 partners, we are working on the C/sells demonstration project to test the system of the future which consists of autonomous cells.
Early completion: Hydropower plant in Vietnam
The third and final unit of the 1200 MW Lai Chau Hydropower Plant in Vietnam went into operation six months ahead of schedule.
