Integrated Water Resources Management
With the aim of sustainable water management and conservation of water resources, the Fichtner Group works on holistic solutions for responsible handling of drinking water with protection of groundwater, lakes, rivers and sea coasts, and prudent use of bodies of water.
This also includes framework water management planning in the course of which we assist our clients thanks to our many years of global experience. We prepare ideological appraisals and, when drawing up water balances, we investigate water yield and the share of this that can be exploited. For stand-alone consultancy contracts and as an integral part of our infrastructure projects, we investigate environmentally sound management and protection of flowing watercourses, standing bodies of water and sea coasts.
For infrastructure projects, we successfully address the technical and civil measures required for framework planning, with civil structures like dams and reservoirs, hydropower plants and spillways as well as river training and waterway traffic engineering, including locks, barrages and ports.
For complex flood protection projects, we combine the creation of natural water retention areas and distributed rainwater infiltration with civil construction measures. This is complemented by precautionary measures, such as preparing flood hazard maps, determining the potential for damage, drawing up protection plans and setting up early warning systems.

Water Supply and Sanitation
The Fichtner Group is engaged worldwide in projects for drinking water production from groundwater, surface water and seawater. To the fore for drinking water supply in rural just as in urban regions is efficient and sustainable exploitation of water resources. Playing a key role for protecting these resources is proper sanitation and wastewater treatment.
Our water experts design concepts and plan drinking water treatment plants and water supply networks as well as supervise implementation of municipal water projects, ranging from decentralized well projects for rural water supply to sophisticated drinking water treatment plants and systems for megacities. They also bring their experience and technical know-how to bear when rehabilitating existing inadequate networks and, alongside reducing technical water losses, also address optimization of managerial aspects through concepts for strengthening administrations.
For sanitation, our engineers plan complex sewer networks at all scales. The design of pumping stations with high capacity wastewater transfer pipelines is often an integral part of our projects. Further, we plan wastewater and sewage treatment plants to meet virtually all technical requirements and we have on hand specialist know-how for industrial wastewater treatment. Wastewater recycling is playing an increasingly important role in water utilization concepts throughout the world and we take this into account in our planning.

For over 40 years, our highly specialized experts have been handling seawater desalination and water treatment projects. Fichtner has been involved in most major seawater desalination systems in the Middle East, in Singapore, Australia, Italy, India, Spain, Egypt and Chile – initially as technical consultant under contract to mostly state-owned supply utilities, but subsequently in independent water (and power) production (IW(P)P) projects acting as lender’s engineer for financing banks or as owner’s engineer for the project company. Our company has built up an incomparable wealth of experience thanks to our planning of a total desalination capacity of 25 million cubic meters per day.
Alongside the thermal MSF and MED processes, today thanks to developments in membrane research, reverse osmosis technology is finding application even in large-scale facilities. Gaining in significance is tie-in of renewable energies to support energy supply for seawater desalination. Matching the desalination technology to the site conditions and manner of energy supply requires meticulous planning.

In this area of our activities, our team, made up of experienced architects, civil engineers and detail designers, plans above-ground structures that are equipped to a high technical standard. These construction projects are overseen by us throughout all phases. Alongside German and international projects for power plants and industrial structures, we are increasingly directing our attention to the sectors of administration, healthcare and renewable energies. Further, refurbishment of existing production facilities under energy and fire protection aspects is gaining in significance.
When implementing construction projects, on behalf of our clients we undertake advisory, coordination and supervisory tasks for individual contract sections as well as for general contractors. In addition, if requested we offer our clients complete planning for bundling and coordinating the services of all specialists and authorized experts that are needed for a construction project.

Civil Engineering and Structural Planning
In the sector of civil structures, we can boast a large number of successfully realized projects. Our experience encompasses planning of retaining structures and construction pits of all types, bridge structures and underpasses as well as tank and silo installations. Also included in our services portfolio are rail stations and platforms with disabled access. Mining and Minerals
For our planning and consultancy services on behalf of the mining and minerals sector, we focus on the interfaces between engineering planning, technology, business management and financing, in particular for mining, mine restoration and underground storage. Likewise playing a part are environmental aspects.
Our mining experts’ many years of experience encompass geological, technical and financial aspects, especially mining of bituminous coal, lignite and non-ferrous metals. Our services in this regard cover evaluation of resources and reserves under international CIM and JORC standards; geotechnical, commercial and environmental appraisals; as well as assessments of technical risk and environmental impacts. Further, we work out new development concepts for mineral extraction and for treatment plants, and assess the geological and technical aspects of underground storage of gases and liquids, like CO2, natural gas and water.
Also particularly worthy of note is our experience in conducting mine restoration projects, for which our support starts with investigation of environmental impacts and proceeds with development of restoration concepts up to monitoring implementation of the entire process.

Our geotechnics teams are made up of very experienced engineers and geologists who can conduct analyses in their own soil mechanics laboratory. Our expertise in geotechnics, geohydrology and dredging is documented by certification as offshore foundation soil experts to the standards of the Federal German BSH Maritime and Hydrographic Agency.
Counting to our core competencies are preparing subsoil reports with recommendations for foundations and conceptual design of auxiliary construction measures. In our own geotechnics lab, we conduct all required analyses for classifying soils. Counting among these are compression and shear tests and permeability investigations as well as in-situ tests in specially equipped field labs.
Other areas of expertise of our geotechnical engineers in the offshore sector are preparation of jacking appraisals for the biggest installation vessels in use in the wind energy sector. For this purpose, the penetration behavior of the support legs is investigated. In the wastewater and sanitation sector, our experts investigate subsoil conditions for sewer construction by innovative microtunneling techniques. Planning of land reclamation and hydraulic filling are our specialties which are complemented by civil engineering geology and hydrogeology as well the specialist areas of sediment recovery and infilling, morphodynamics and searches for unexploded ordnance.
