Comparison of industrial heating costs: solar thermal energy vs. conventional heat generation, Germany

Comparison of industrial heating costs: solar thermal energy vs. conventional heat generation, Germany
With the “Solar Heating Roadmap”, the Federal German Ministry of the Environment developed a strategy to speed up the growth of solar thermal energy in Germany up to 2030 that attests to the substantial potential for expanding solar industrial process heat. For this to become reality, though, solar process heat must be at least as economically attractive as conventional heat generation in natural gas- and oil-fired boiler plants and IC engine cogeneration plants. Fichtner together with the German Solar Industry Association (BSW) undertook a study into the present costs of generating industrial process heat at below 100°C by solar energy in comparison with the costs of conventional technologies and also investigated the prospects for the years 2020 and 2030.

Our services

  • Determination of costs for generation of industrial process heat by solar energy
  • Comparison with the costs when applying conventional technologies
  • Forecasts for 2020 and 2030 on the competitiveness of solar process heat
