We have been planning and providing consultancy worldwide for hydropower projects for decades. We assist our clients in preparing studies and in new construction and rehabilitation projects throughout all phases, from preliminary study through execution to acceptance. For planning and implementing hydropower plants, our engineers handle component design, for example the design discharge for run-of-river power plants or optimal reservoir dimensioning in consideration of hydrology and projected electricity sales. The plants are so conceived that their environmental impacts and social costs are minimized, with economic performance having a high priority.
Acting as owner’s engineer, we assist our clients in compiling contractual and technical tender documents, implementation planning, and bid evaluation up to contract signing. Fichtner has been playing an active role in the success story of wind energy since the 1980s. For example, Fichtner as owner’s engineer rendered consultancy services for the first wind farms in Germany, assisted in capacity expansion in developing countries, and advised the German Research and Development Ministry on its first wind energy program, from which later the EEG Renewable Energy Sources Act was developed.

We handle large-scale ground-mounted as well as roof-mounted and building-integrated PV plants, from initial feasibility study, through detail engineering and tendering, up to site supervision, acceptance testing and monitoring of plant operation. So that plants based on solar energy will also be able to supply power independently of insolation, they are now being combined with conventional generation plants and energy storage. - Geothermal Energy
Heat pumps permit the exploitation of near-surface geothermal energy at depths down to 400 m for heat extraction. Deeper geothermal sources down to 3000 m can likewise be used for heat extraction but these serve above all for power generation. In this connection, a distinction can be made between hydrothermal and petrothermal systems, with the latter also referred to as hot dry rock systems. For sources in the lower temperature range, an organic Rankine or a Kalina cycle may find application.
When planning geothermal power plants, Fichtner offers all services for the complete above-ground part of the power plant, including thermal water treatment, geothermal well planning and the entire interface to the underground part. Also obtaining permits under mining and pollution control legislation as well as feeding in of the generated electricity to the grid are handled by Fichtner’s experts. In an environmental impact assessment (EIA), our experienced experts and consultants from a range of disciplines identify and evaluate environmental impacts for all manner of infrastructure projects. The aspect of social responsibility is additionally considered in an environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA). Our economists, environmental engineers and organization experts support projects for environmentally sound and safe disposal with resources recovery of all wastes generated by society’s economic and production cycle. For over 30 years, the focus has been on waste avoidance and resources recovery from waste.
Fichtner draws up master plans and designs highly sophisticated waste management concepts for public and private waste disposal entities, advises governments, and optimizes waste management in industrial processes. Our expertise is based on numerous successful projects in the communal and industrial sectors in Germany and internationally. Primary focuses of our consultancy are privatization of municipal waste management services and outsourcing of central utilities supply and waste disposal tasks in industry. Because waste is also an energy carrier and source of feedstocks, we focus on the best possible utilization of its energy and recoverable materials content. To ensure optimal resources recovery from waste and its ultimate disposal, we plan thermal and mechanical-biological waste treatment plants. Environmentally sound landfilling is the final link in the disposal chain.
Since the start of the 1960s, our engineers have investigated, engineered, tendered for, and supervised realization and rehabilitation of facilities for waste transfer; biological treatment, i.e. composting and anaerobic digestion; waste sorting; thermal treatment; and landfilling for all waste categories, starting with classical municipal solid waste through sewage sludge and up to hazardous waste.
As well as conventional plants for waste treatment, on the basis of refuse derived fuel (RDF), Fichtner plans facilities for supplying power, steam and heat to industry and communities. For thermal treatment in combined heat and power and industrial power plants or also waste-to-energy (WTE) plants, finding application are stoker-fired and fluidized bed furnaces as well as gasification (plasma gasification) and pyrolysis.
Our landfill planning ranges from the conventional reactor landfill to special-purpose landfills for treated waste streams. To protect soils and water resources, we implement systems for leachate collection and treatment as well as for landfill gas extraction.
